West Hollywood’s Melrose Triangle project lurches forward

After a three-year wait, a mixed-use development at the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard, Melrose Avenue, and Almont Avenue in West Hollywood appears to be moving forward, reports Urbanize LA.
The developer of the Melrose Triangle project, Charles Company, has reportedly given tenants of the commercial building at 9060 Santa Monica Boulevard notices to vacate in 30 days, signaling demolition and construction could be on the horizon. Curbed has contacted Charles Company for more information.
The Melrose Triange project, designed by LA-based Studio One Eleven, was approved in 2014. It will bring a trio of new buildings to the nearly three-acre site.
The new development will hold 76 apartments (20 percent of which will be available to moderate-income households), as well as 137,000 square feet of offices, 82,000 square feet of retail space, and 884 parking spots. The buildings will reach heights ranging from 55 to 70 feet tall.
The Moderne-style Jones Dog and Cat Hospital on the site now will likely be knocked down to make way for the new mixed-user. According to the LA Conservancy, this “may be the only remaining, example of the work of master architects Walter Wurdeman and Welton Becket in the city,” referring to the renowned team that expanded and remodeled the building in 1938.
The Los Angeles Conservancy is suing over the proposed demolition of the Dog and Cat Hospital. While litigation is pending, the buildings can not be razed, says Conservancy spokesperson Tiffany Narvaez. A court date is set for October 24.
Demolition permits have not been issued for the site, the city of West Hollywood confirmed to Curbed.
