2020 New Models Guide: 30 Cars, Trucks, And SUVs Coming Soon

2020 Alfa Romeo GTV

Status: All New
Release Date: Unknown

As part of FCA’s five-year strategy, Alfa Romeo will roll out a host of new vehicles – sports cars and SUVs alike. One of the most significant debuts will be the GTV. Based on the current Giulia, the new GTV will be a 600-horsepower (447-kilowatt) hybrid coupe with four seats and all wheel drive. Alfa hasn’t given an official release date.

2020 Audi Sport EV

Status: All-new
Release Date: Late 2020

Audi Sport, the German automaker’s performance sub-brand, announced plans for an Audi Sport EV by 2020, which sounds great. But beyond that, there’s little to go on. The announcement was less about this particular vehicle and more about the brand’s overall plans for performance-oriented EVs, which include several more new vehicles over the next decade. We can bet the 2020 model won’t be a crossover, because Audi did specifically say the crossovers would be coming later. So… sedan? Coupe? Hatchback? Your guess is as good as ours.

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe

Status: Variant
Release Date: Early 2020

To compete with the Mercedes-Benz CLA and other four-door coupes, BMW will bring its four-door 2 Series Gran Coupe out to play. The 2er will be all-wheel drive only in the U.S., and should come powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine producing upwards of 302 horsepower.

2020 BMW i4

Status: All New
Release Date: Late 2019

Unlike the i3 and the i8, the BMW i4 will be the brand’s first fully electric mass-market vehicle – and its design will be inspired by the Vision Dynamics Concept. Reports suggest the EV will have a driving range of up to 435 miles (700 kilometers), and will arrive either late in 2019 or early 2020.

2020 BMW M3

Status: Redesign
Release date: Early 2019

In early December, BMW announced plans to launch 26 new or redesigned M models by 2020. That’s a lot of Ms (BMW says it’ll be a mix of true M models and M-Performance trim levels), and we can only speculate about most of them. Here’s what we do know: the fan-favorite M3 will be at the center of the project, with the M4 models at its side. The 2020 M3 is expected to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this spring, and we’ll report more as soon as we can.

2020 BMW X3e

Status: Variant
Release Date: Unknown

In fall 2016, BMW confirmed its plans to go ahead with an all-electric version of the X3 SUV, and last summer, announced its arrival some time for the 2020 model year. Beyond that, we don’t know much else. The X3e (or iX3) will share the X3e’s platform and most components; the electric powertrain will likely be borrowed from the BMW “i” lineup. Price-wise, the X3e will probably land somewhere between the base and top-end X3 trim levels.

2020 Cadillac Escalade And Escalade ESV

Status: Redesign
Release Date: Late 2019

A fully redesigned Escalade is long overdue (current model above), but Cadillac has been making the most of that time. A new 4.0-liter V8 engine is on the way, and a plug-in hybrid model will probably be an option. Rumors abound that Cadillac is abandoning the solid rear axle in the next-gen Escalade, to be replaced with an independent rear suspension or perhaps an air suspension system. In terms of design, the Escalade will probably incorporate some exterior styling cues from the popular Escala concept, with an interior designed to attract BMW and Mercedes cross-shoppers. According to Automobile, pricing will start around $78,000.

2020 Ford Baby Bronco

Status: All-New
Release Date: Late 2019

A new Bronco is on the docket; Ford has talked plenty about its upcoming rugged off-roader, but often forgotten is the smaller, equally capable “ Baby Bronco ” also promised by the Blue Oval. We expect the “Baby Bronco” sometime later this year, and like its larger sibling, it should be rugged with a unique design that separates from other standard crossovers in the class.

2020 Ford Explorer ST

Status: Variant
Release: Summer 2019

The edgy new Ford Explorer debuted at the Detroit Auto Show and goes on sale later this year. Alongside the base model, the Blue Oval also rolled out its 400-horsepower Explorer ST sibling. With big 20-inch wheels, high-performance brakes, and a top speed of 143 miles per hour, it promises to be one fast SUV.

2020 Genesis G70 Coupe

Status: Variant
Release Date: Late 2019

As we’ve previously noted, the Genesis G70 sedan (pictured above) is well on its way to success in the 2019 model year. We’re looking forward to the upcoming coupe version, which is designed to compete against luxury two-door models from the German brands. Look for the same turbo four-cylinder and twin-turbo V6 powertrains that are offered in the sedan, along with similar pricing. If the G70 lineup is a hit, Genesis may introduce a wagon.

2020 Genesis GV80

Status: All-new
Release Date: Summer 2019

Between 2019 and 2021, Genesis plans to introduce three crossovers, effectively doubling the luxury brand’s lineup. The GV80 midsize crossover will be first out of the gate, and will look much like it did when it was unveiled in concept form at this year’s New York Auto Show. The GV70, based on the 2018 G70 sedan, is up next, to be followed by a “crossover utility vehicle.” All are currently expected to be part of the class of 2020. The GV80 is up on Genesis’ site, though no pricing information is available; we’ll keep you posted on these new Genesis models as we learn more.

2020 GM Electric Crossovers

Status: All-new
Release Date: Unknown

Last April, Chevrolet revealed the FNR-X concept (above) at the Shanghai Auto Show. Last November, GM’s CEO Mary Barra hinted at plans for another new electric crossover in the works for 2020. The details are sketchy at this point, but it appears one or both of these vehicles may share the Chevy Bolt’s platform, which makes it likely that the powertrain would also carry over, providing 200 horsepower and about 238 miles of range. The Chevy FNR-X concept hasn’t been officially confirmed for production, but if these crossovers will be ready by 2020, we should know more details in the near future.

2020 Hyundai Crossovers

Status: All-new/Redesigned
Release Date: Unknown

Hyundai has been a bit behind the curve on crossovers and SUVs, leading to a decline in sales this year. To make up for it, the company is going all in, and recently announced there would be eight crossovers introduced by 2020. That includes models we’ve already seen, such as the Kona, and may also include redesigns of the existing Tucson, Santa Fe, and Santa Fe Sport. We will be on the lookout for hints of a new A-segment crossover, and an eight-passenger SUV, with powertrain options that include fuel cell, diesel, and plug-in hybrid technology. More information may be available as soon as the Detroit Auto Show in January.

2020 Hyundai Santa Cruz Pickup

Status: All-new
Release Date: Sometime In 2020

In 2015, Hyundai arrived at the Detroit Auto Show with a crossover-based light pickup concept called the Santa Cruz. This summer, Hyundai announced that the Santa Cruz has been green-lit for production and will join the brand’s Stateside lineup for the 2020 model year. The production Santa Cruz will be based on the Santa Fe crossover, but Hyundai hasn’t shared any powertrain options. The concept featured a 2.0-liter turbodiesel, but that will almost certainly change (unless Hyundai also plans to use a turbodiesel in the new crossover models on the previous slide). We’ll be on the lookout for more details.

2020 Jaguar F-Type

Status: Redesign
Release Date: Unknown

Jaguar has said that it plans to electrify every model by 2020, and it just so happens that the F-Type coupe is due for a redesign right around then (even though it just received a facelift for 2018). Sports car purists may protest, but Jaguar has no plans to sacrifice elegance or performance in its new hybridized lineup. No release or pricing information is available yet, though the redesigned F-Type is unlikely to arrive sooner than 2020.

2020 Jeep Wrangler Plug-In Hybr >

Status: Variant
Release Date: Unknown

Two years following the redesigned 2018 Jeep Wrangler, it will be joined in showrooms and on trails by a new plug-in hybrid model. There are few details about this radical new Wrangler, but plenty of speculation, namely that it’s likely to borrow powertrain components from the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. If that’s the case, we can expect about 33 miles of pure electric range. An EcoDiesel model is also in the works. Stay tuned for more details about pricing and availability in the coming months.

2020 Kia Mohave

Status: All-New
Release Date: Early 2020

The initial success of the Kia Telluride means the Korean company isn’t slowing down its SUV mojo. A second, smaller – but still rugged – SUV will join the Telluride later this year or early in 2020. Rumors hint at the name Mohave, which the company uses in markets outside of the U.S. already.

2020 Land Rover Defender

Status: All-New
Release Date: Late 2019

The long wait for a revived Land Rover Defender is nearly over. The company teased a camouflaged prototype recently, showing off its signature boxy shape but modern cabin. We hope for a debut sometime later this year, but don’t be surprised if it doesn’t show up until 2020.

2020 Land Rover Road Rover

Status: All-New
Release Date: Late 2019

Land Rover has all but confirmed rumors of an upcoming sedan, tentatively dubbed the Road Rover. It’s fun to let our imaginations run wild, but we won’t be surprised if the Road Rover arrives looking somewhat like a Jaguar, considering it will share a platform with the upcoming XJ redesign. The Road Rover will have an electric powertrain, in keeping with Land Rover’s decree that its lineup will be heavily electrified in the coming years, and mild off-road capabilities are a possibility. Pricing information is not yet available.

2020 Mazdaspeed3

Status: Variant
Release Date: Late 2019

Late last year, Mazda debuted its new 3 hatchback and sedan at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Mazda’s new Skyactiv-X (though absent from L.A.) is supercharged, expected to reduce fuel consumption by about 30 percent, and projected for availability later this year. But we could see some of that same tech carry over to the hot version of the 3 hatch, too. A new Mazdspeed3 model is expected this generation.

2020 Mazda RX-9

Status: All-New
Release Date: Unknown

A reborn, reimagined Mazda RX-9 has long been on the docket. But only recently with the introduction of the Mazda RX-Vision concept have those rumors been more real. Using the concept as a jumping off point, our artists imagined the Mazda RX-9 sports car of the future, complete with a Kodo design language and a Wankel rotary engine. Here’s hoping it actually happens.

2020 Mercedes-Benz EQC

Status: All-New
Release Date: Late 2019

As part of Mercedes-Benz’s electric push, the EQC concept will be the first fully electric SUV from the German marque. The near-production prototype debuted last year at a private event in Stockholm, and in the States at CES in Vegas shortly thereafter, but probably won’t go on sale until late this year or early 2020.

2020 Nissan Z

Status: All-New
Release Date: Unknown

The current Nissan 370Z has grown long in tooth; the sports car hasn’t been updated since it was built way back in 2009. But reports suggest that we could see an all-new version in the near future, and our rendering artists have imagined a version that falls perfectly in line with the rest of the range. If Nissan does decide to revive the nameplate, expect the new model to ride on a Mercedes platform.

2020 Polestar 3 / 4

Status: All-New
Release Date: Early 2020

With the launch of the 1 sports car and 2 sport sedan, a Polestar compact crossover is next on the list, to be followed by a convertible. Polestar is keeping specs under wraps for now, but we know that the vehicles will ride on Volvo platforms, be serviced at Volvo dealerships, and will be offered through Volvo’s subscription plans. We’ll have more information about pricing when it becomes available.

2020 Porsche 911 Hybr >

Status: Variant
Release Date: Unknown

The next generation of the Porsche 911 is here, complete with upgrades in the tech and performance department, above all else. But Porsche is still relatively quiet on the upcoming powertrain lineup. Rumors suggest a plug-in 911 is coming, and like most 911s before it, there will probably be turbos involved.

2020 Porsche Taycan

Status: All-New
Release Date: September, 2019

Porsche teased its first fully electric vehicle, the Taycan, by way of the Mission E concept way back in 2015. But as we inch towards the 2020 model year, the Taycan is closer to production. The new electric Porsche will debut this September, and should go on sale sometime next year as a 2020 model.

2020 Redspace REDS

Status: All-New
Release Date: Unknown

Storied auto designer Chris Bangle has a new gig with a Chinese car brand. The Redspace REDS is a far cry from Bangle’s work during his BMW days, but we can’t deny that it’s eye-catching and forward-thinking. The boxy shell of the REDS (which stands for Revolutionary Electric Dream Space) houses a space that’s more of a lounge on wheels than anything we’d recognize as a car; the cabin can be rearranged for social gatherings in a manner similar to Chrysler’s Stow ’n Go system, the doors open via button, the roof is a solar panel. No specs are available on the EV powertrain. Though this looks like little more than an expensive design exercise, it’s actually scheduled for production and should be available in some Asian markets in 2020. Export to the U.S. is doubtful, but the REDS is too cool not to share here.

2020 Toyota 86

Status: All-New
Release Date: Early 2020

The future of the two-door Toyobaru is in limbo; there have been reports both hinting at and denying its revival. But rendering artists have imagined the Toyota-badged 86 sports car that could be ready for the next decade. Borrowing styling cues from dramatic new models like the C-HR, and updated vehicles like the Camry, this 86 concept looks hot. Let’s hope it has a future past 2020.

2020 Volkswagen Golf

Status: Redesign
Release Date: Summer 2019

As Volkswagen attempts to recover from Dieselgate, the trusty Golf has done much of the heavy lifting — the affordable compact hatchback remains well-liked even as the brand’s reputation suffers. That means VW really needs to hit a home run with the Golf’s upcoming redesign. As usual, styling is likely to be a conservative evolution of the current model. The e-Golf won’t be joining the eighth generation, since the new I.D. lineup will take over for the brand’s fully-electric needs. However, a plug-in hybrid version of the Golf is anticipated alongside the sporty Golf GTI (which is also rumored to be a candidate for hybridization). Pricing and powertrain information will be available closer to launch.
